Chapter Thirteen

The sound of the Goon Squad approaching came with earth trembling swiftness. Unlike the previous entry into the settlement, this time, they had six A.P.C’s moving in a diamond formation with one in front, two on either side of it only a little behind, and the last at the rear.

Giant spotlights atop the vehicles shone brightly at Duke and the rebels behind him.

“Duke Calgary,” a voice came from within, over an intercom system. “You are under arrest for suspicion of inciting terrorism. Step forward and come with us.”

Duke didn’t move from his position, just ahead of the rebels. He rose a hand into the air, middle finger raised to the A.P.C.

“So be it,” the A.P.C driver said.

As before, twelve men exited each vehicle, with their doors open for cover.

“Fire, ready,” Duke shouted into the night.

He held a Molotov in one hand in case the boys on the rooftops couldn’t hear his call. As soon as they saw the spark light, they knew it was time to attack.

The rebels that were sent off to create a barricade behind the vehicles moved out into the street. Those lucky enough to hold a gun prepared to fire.

Duke lit the thin strip of fabric hanging out of the bottle of moonshine.

“Drop your weapon,” the voice came over the intercom again.

“Rain hell down upon them,” Duke shouted, running forward before throwing the glass bottle toward the foremost A.P.C.

It struck the hood, setting the entire front ablaze.

Duke ducked and ran into a narrow alleyway beside his house for cover. He held his position there, lifting the pre-placed rifle he received from Atticus all those months ago.

Ducking in and out of cover, he fired a round or two off at a time. Without needing to give an order, the rebels found hard cover before opening fire from both the front and back. Those who stood on the rooftops began hurling fire down onto the vehicles, while others started shooting at any exposed Goon they could see.

“They’re on the rooftops,” Duke heard one of the Goons say.

Every second shoulder flipped; they dropped onto a bended knee and shot at the skies.

The Goon Squad’s well-trained soldiers managed to tick away the rebels’ numbers, even though vastly outnumbered. Still, many Goons caught fire, with their vehicles set ablaze.

Duke knew there would be casualties in this battle. The rebels had greater numbers, but many were untrained. Holding cover, breaking line of sight, and various other military tactics escaped them. Far too many swung wide and into the open, meeting a bullet from a covered Goon.

The soldiers that fought from behind managed to take out the most exposed Goons; the Goons that stood between solid metal doors had cover from the front and back.

The sound of those unlucky souls that caught ablaze from the Molotov cocktails rung heavily in Duke’s ear. Their painstaking screeches sent shivers down his spine, knowing that they’d suffer greatly before death.

The Goon Squad may have been out here for blood, but Duke was still a man.
